Gr.1s as School Leaders!

I am so proud of our Grade Ones and how they have taken on such a wonderful role in the school.   As some of you know, we have been cleaning up the garden and courtyard at the center of our school.  Now that the Story Pole is finished we can now start using the courtyard.  Over the past eight years that I have been at Yennadon the garden has looked the same.  Thank you to Aaliya, Breanna and Syanne for bringing in some bulbs to plant.  They will look so beautiful once we have the gardens ready!

As part of our Social Studies, building school community, roles and responsibility at school are all part of the Gr. 1 curriculum Our grade ones are setting a wonderful example for the whole school.

Making sure we keep the floor clean so we can garden.

Anti-Bully Day????

Every day is Anti-bully day at Yennadon!  Yes today we make a special effort to bring attention to Anti-Bully Day but this is a daily learning of respect for all at Yennadon.

Today is a good reminder that "You are your actions!"  We all need to care for living things... we all have to care!

Outdoor Play

On our last day at the park we discovered that one of our favourite trees had been cut down.  It was a smooth and tall.  We had many hypothesis as to why the tree was the way it was???  Well we supposed some of the trees were cut down as they were unsafe.  We discovered that our favourite tree was now our favourite log.  After our alphabet search we found different ways to use the log.

It was great fun balancing on it, trying to roll it, discovering leavers to move the log and then making it in a teeter tauter!  It really worked too!

Literature Reading Presentations

Wow, what a wonderful response from all the boys and girls wanting to read their "Eyes on Text" from Meerkat Mail.  It is a wonderful story about family and being happy with who you are!

Here is one example of some children reading their "Eyes on Text" in front of the class.  This is great practice for when they present their speeches in intermediate grades.

We are all Mathematicians!!!

We are looking at number patterns with addition and subtraction.  We have also been working on our doubles and discovering different Math strategies.  We are discovering there is more than one way to solve a problem and work through the problem.

Check out our Strategies we have been discovering since the beginning of the year!

Yennadon Story Pole Ceremony

Today our school Story Pole was blessed and welcomed by local Elders.  We all had a chance to put a feather with our memory of carving the pole written on it.  This has been a community building process and a three year journey for our school.  Our Story Pole will then be in our library for everyone to see and enjoy.  Everyone got a red ribbon to remember the ceremony and a placed a rock from the Alouette River at the front of the school.  Our class brought the rocks from the river and in a week or so will return them to the river.  They symbolized the spirit of our river and the surrounding area.

Here is a video of the Story Pole entering our gym...
